Runner Rug Sizes: 3x9, 3x10 & 3x12 Explained

A hallway runner should fit the space, not simply match a size printed on a label. Vintage hand-knotted runners are often slightly narrower or longer than their approximate size category, so always compare the individual rug's listed measurements with your hallway.

Choosing between 3×9, 3×10 and 3×12

3×9 ft: shorter hallways

A runner around 9 feet long can work well in a compact hallway or a passage between rooms. Check where doors open and where the rug should begin and end, rather than trying to cover every inch of floor.

3×10 ft: everyday hallways

A runner around 10 feet long often suits a medium-length corridor. It can also add warmth beside a long kitchen counter, provided it does not obstruct doors, appliances or walkways.

3×12 ft: long, uninterrupted spaces

A 12-foot runner is useful for an extended hallway where a shorter rug would leave a large empty stretch. Check that the ends have comfortable floor clearance and do not bunch under opening doors.

Measure the width as carefully as the length

Measure your hallway at its narrowest point, including door frames and any built-in cabinets. Many people prefer some visible flooring on both sides of a runner; roughly 3–5 inches per side can be a useful starting point, but the right margin depends on the space. A rug sold as “3×10” may not measure exactly 3 feet by 10 feet.

Mark the proposed rug dimensions on the floor with painter's tape. Walk the route, open nearby doors, and make sure furniture and thresholds remain clear. For more measuring advice, see our guide to measuring for a rug.

Choosing an authentic vintage runner

Look beyond length to the rug's actual width, pile, colour and pattern. Hand-knotted vintage runners can have small variations in shape and dimensions that reflect their handmade construction. For smooth floors, use a suitable non-slip rug pad; stair installation requires specialist fitting rather than simply laying a runner loose.
