Why Heat Is the Single Biggest Threat to Wool
Wool fiber has a microscopic scaly outer structure, similar in principle to how a pinecone's scales open and close. Under heat and moisture combined, and especially under agitation, those scales lock together permanently in a process called felting. Once felted, the fiber structure cannot be reversed by brushing, combing, or any home remedy. This is exactly why steam cleaners, despite being marketed as safe and effective for carpets generally, are one of the most common causes of ruined hand-knotted rugs. What carpet companies call "steam cleaning" is actually hot water extraction: heated water forced into the fibers under pressure. For wall-to-wall synthetic carpet, that's fine. For hand-knotted wool, it's close to the worst thing you can do to it.
Heat also strips lanolin, the natural protective oil in wool fiber, leaving it dry, brittle, and more prone to breaking over time. A rug that's been steam cleaned repeatedly often starts to feel stiff or scratchy compared to its original hand, and that change is permanent.
Why Alkaline Cleaners Are the Wrong Chemistry for Wool
Wool is a protein fiber, chemically closer to hair than to cotton. Protein fibers are sensitive to pH: alkaline (high-pH) cleaners, including most synthetic carpet shampoos, generic all-purpose sprays, and standard laundry detergent, break down the protein structure and strip lanolin at the same time. This is why a cleaner that works fine on a synthetic carpet can visibly dull or roughen a wool rug. The safe range is a mild, pH-neutral, wool-specific detergent, or diluted white vinegar, which is mildly acidic and closer to wool's natural pH.
Why Natural Dyes Need Extra Caution
Many hand-knotted Persian rugs, especially vintage and antique pieces, are colored with natural, plant- and mineral-based dyes rather than modern synthetic acid dyes. Natural dyes produce the muted, complex color depth these rugs are known for, but they bond to the fiber less aggressively than synthetic dyes, and that bond weakens further with age and oxidation. That means an older rug with natural dyes can bleed even from cleaning methods that would be perfectly safe on a newer, synthetic-dyed piece. This is exactly why a colorfastness test matters before you clean anything, not just as a formality.

Dampen a clean white cloth with cold water (or your diluted cleaning solution) and press it firmly against an inconspicuous area of the rug, ideally in a corner or under furniture, for a few seconds. If any color transfers onto the cloth, the dyes are not stable enough for that cleaning method, and you should stop and consult a professional rather than proceed.
Why You Blot Instead of Rub
Rubbing a spill does two things, both bad: it drives liquid deeper into the pile toward the foundation, and on a hand-knotted rug specifically, aggressive rubbing can fray or distort individual knots, permanently changing the texture of that spot. Blotting, working from the outer edge of the spill inward, lifts liquid up and out instead of pushing it down and around. This single habit change prevents more permanent staining than any product you could apply.

- Act immediately. The longer a spill sits, the more time it has to bond with the wool fiber and, in the case of certain stains, to chemically interact with the dye.

Why Pet Urine Is a Special Case
Urine is acidic, and that acidity actively destabilizes dye bonds over time, which is part of why old urine stains are so much harder to remove than fresh ones and why they sometimes cause a color shift even after the stain itself is gone. Heat makes this worse: applying any heat to a urine stain, including a steam cleaner or even a hair dryer, can set the protein compounds in the stain permanently. For anything beyond a very fresh, small accident, this is a case where professional treatment genuinely outperforms DIY, since professional cleaners use enzymatic treatments engineered to break down urine compounds at a level home products can't reach, without the heat that sets the problem in place.
What to Never Use on a Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Use a higher head setting if your vacuum allows it. Rotate the rug periodically so wear and sun exposure distribute evenly rather than concentrating in one traffic path.
