The Nahavand Weaving Tradition
Nahavand is an ancient town in western Persia's Hamadan province, with a weaving history that runs deep even by Persian rug standards — the region has been inhabited for millennia, and its rug-making tradition reflects that long continuity. While Nahavand rugs share the same durable, single-wefted construction found throughout the wider Hamadan region, they carry their own distinct artistic identity: bolder color contrasts, more overtly tribal medallion work, and a graphic confidence that sets them apart from the finer, more restrained weaves of nearby villages. This boldness isn't a limitation of the weave — it's the point. Nahavand weavers worked in a visual language built for presence: strong central medallions, saturated reds and indigos, and geometric motifs passed down through generations rather than redrawn from workshop patterns.
